Synchrotron and Synchrotron Self-compton Spectral Signatures and Blazar Emission Models

چکیده

We find that energy losses due to synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission in blazar jets can produce distinctive signatures in the time-averaged synchrotron and SSC spectra of these objects. For a fairly broad range of particle injection distributions, SSC-loss dominated synchrotron emission exhibits a spectral dependence Fν ∼ ν−3/2. The presence or absence of this dependence in the optical and ultraviolet spectra of flat spectrum radio quasars such as 3C 279 and in the soft X-ray spectra of high frequency BL Lac objects such as Mrk 501 gives a robust measure of the importance of SSC losses. Furthermore, for partially cooled particle distributions, spectral breaks of varying sizes can appear in the synchrotron and SSC spectra and will be related to the spectral indices of the emission below the break. These spectral signatures place constraints on the size scale and the non-thermal particle content of the emitting plasma as well as the observer orientation relative to the jet axis. A synchrotron self - Compton model with low energy electron cut - off for the blazar S 5 0716 + 714

Context. In a self-absorbed synchrotron source with power-law electrons, rapid inverse Compton cooling sets in when the brightness temperature of the source reaches TB ∼ 10 12 K. However, brightness temperatures inferred from observations of intra-day variable sources (IDV) are well above the ”Compton catastrophe” limit. This can be understood if the underlying electron distribution cuts off at...

A Proton Synchrotron Blazar Model for Flaring in Markarian 501

The spectral energy distribution (SED) of blazars typically has a double-humped appearance usually interpreted in terms of synchrotron self-Compton models. In proton blazar models, the SED is instead explained in terms of acceleration of protons and subsequent cascading. We discuss a variation of the Synchrotron Proton Blazar model, first proposed by Mücke & Protheroe (1999), in which the low e...

How is the blazar GeV emission really produced ?

We show that the external Compton (EC) model for the production of the GeV emission in blazars makes specific predictions for the spectrum and variability of those blazars characterized by a high Compton dominance (Compton to synchrotron luminosity ratio). These unavoidable features have not been observed, casting doubt on the validity of this popular model. We argue that synchrotron-self Compt...

Time-dependent Synchrotron and Compton Spectra from Microquasar Jets

Jet models for the high-energy emission of Galactic X-ray binary sources have regained significant interest with detailed spectral and timing studies of the X-ray emission from microquasars, the recent detection by the HESS collaboration of very-high-energy $\gamma$-rays from the microquasar LS~5039, and the earlier suggestion of jet models for ultraluminous X-ray sources observed in many nearb...
